Every child has a bundle of possibilities. The extent to which his/her creative potential is explored is largely dependent on the parent or guardian. One of the best ways to help the development of a young mind is to encourage creative thought. Naturally, children are adventurous; they want to explore. It is pertinent to note that creativity is more than just arts and crafts it is a process of thought. Helping children to express themselves through different mediums help develop different aspects of thinking.
Our world today is advancing in technology by the day, it’s therefore a clarion call to parents/guardians to adopt ways to mold creative minds.
So, how can you help a child reach his or her creative potential?
Adopt the “multiple solution” approach
More often than not, we tend to get acquainted to what’s working than what’s possible. You have to encourage your child to come up with multiple solutions to the problems he/ she faces. Teach him that there is not always one correct answer to every problem; and sometimes he needs to think about a problem in multiple ways. This is brainstorming. This idea can be as simple as telling your child that he can paint on a piece of paper held vertically or horizontally not restricted to one way. This basic message will make the child more likely to experiment in self expression.
Let them learn to decide
It’s very common to find parents and guardians choosing for their children. They make it seem as though the child has no option. This should not be so rather teach them how to make a choice. Don’t make all the decisions for your child, give them a choice. As I mentioned earlier, you can work with your child on brainstorming. Brainstorming ideas is when you make a written or verbal list of idea. All ideas are welcomed and no one is allowed to criticize any ideas. During brainstorming your child won’t have to feel pressured and won’t feel afraid of being judged for an unusual idea.
Offer diverse opportunities
The most important part of inspiring creativity is offering children many diverse opportunities to express themselves. Find their interests and appeal to what they like. Be creative in your medium and your child will be creative in his or her expression.
It’s important to bring creative play to all situations. Encourage creativity during play time, during an outdoor walk or even during bath time! Constant stimulation through unique activities provides the most creativity inspiring situations.
Every child has creative potential. Though it may not be displayed in the same way, but they all have their own unique and higher level thought processes. As a parent or guardian, you can help your child reach his or her greatest potential through encouragement, offering creative opportunities, and creating an open and comfortable environment.
