Achieving Your 2018 Goals

By – Lois Peters

Couple of days to the end of the year, I watched a motivational video that taught me a few good lessons to start my 2018 on the right path. Amidst the things I learnt, I was quite impressed as to how eloquently and with so much deft the speaker maximized the role of storytelling in passing across his message. I learnt the art and researched further as to how I can improve my speaking skills. Have I begun crushing my goals 2018? Yes!

A wise man once said, If you want to change the world, start by dressing your bed in the morning. Weird right? But thats definitely true. If you can and have been consistent at making your bed in the morning when you wake up, then youre well on your way to get your goals achieved. Why because, one of the disciplines of success is consistency. Have you noticed that some of the good things of life a steeped in a lot of stress? And to be able to access the treasures laden beneath all the stress, you must imbibe the discipline of consistency, to keep mining until you reach the desired goal. Yet there is one more thing that ignites and sustains the passion as you forge the path of success, and that is achievement. Brian Tracy once said that in achieving your tiny goals, you get yourself more empowered to achieve more. For those little achievements serve as adrenaline and gets you crushing more goals.

So its 2018 and everyone has got a New Year resolution or New Years goal. The question is how many people who have set these goals will achieve them? Your guess is as good as mine! The challenge is usually not in setting goals or New Year resolutions. Recent research shows that while 52% of participants in a resolution study were confident with their goals, only 12% actually achieved their goals. While these stats may not be news for those of us who have made New Years resolution in the past and failed, it is somewhat surprising to see that failure rates are so high. Most of the times, it is as a result of people setting unrealistic goals, so their goals are dead on arrival. But below are simple pragmatic steps in achieving your 2018 goal

VISION BOARDING. A goal that you can actually see is massively more powerful than a goal you write down on a checklist. This is a favorite technique of mine and it works very well if youre a visual learner. Vision boards are comprised of pictures (from the magazines) that motivate the creator of that board. Want to lose weight? Cut out a pic of a bikini clad model (dont pick a model thats totally out of your league, be realistic). Want to make more money? Cut out a pic that speaks to you on that level. You get the idea.

BE ACCOUNTABLE. Making yourself accountable to your friends and family is one of the best ways to reach your goals. Sure, its uncomfortable to share your setbacks. But when you do, youre going to get emails from friends who have experienced the same and theyll get your mind back on track. And when you tell them about the milestones you reach, youre going to get applause from people wishing they were you and reaching those same goals too. More especially, theyre going to be your sounding board to make sure you achieve your goals and targets.

BREAK IT UP. You know they say Rome wasnt built in a day, well, yes it wasnt or what were you expecting I was gonna say? Many people abandon goals because theyre just too dang big. If youve done this to yourself, stop now. Change your game plan. Take for instance the goal of becoming your own boss. Its a noble goal, but if youre a cubicle dweller, its a hefty one. So break it up into bite-sized chunks. Start by launching a side hustle and see where that takes you. Select milestones to get there and make each of those a tiny goal. Perhaps a percentage of traffic increase on your website, or reaching a certain number of clients or bringing in a certain amount of revenue. Breaking your big goal into small ones will make jumping off the cliff of self-employment a much more feasible option for you.

SET A DATE. One of the best ways to knock out a goal is to put it on your calendar. If you put a stake in the ground and impose a date on yourself, youre much more likely to reach it. Set a date for yourself so you have something to work toward.

Do these and watch yourself ace at goal crushing this year. And to your success, I take a bow!
